Sima Gope: The Village Girl Who Guards India's Border

Sima Gope grew up in Hendaljuri village, Ghatsila — one of five daughters in a family that couldn't afford a single school fee. In that part of Jharkhand, girls from families like hers don't go to school. They stay home.

In 1999, an Art of Living Free School opened nearby. Sima enrolled in 2005. Free education, free uniforms, free stationery, free mid-day meals — every barrier that had kept her family from formal schooling was removed.

She scored 84% in her Class X boards. She topped her Intermediate exams at Ghatsila College. She completed her B.Sc. And then she did the thing she had been preparing for since childhood — she cleared the Border Security Force selection, survived one of the most rigorous training programmes in the country, and came out the other side as a BSF officer serving India's borders.

Five daughters. Zero school fees. One free school seat. One BSF uniform.

The school that started Sima's journey still runs today. It still needs support to keep starting journeys like hers.
